The interiors darling of the east throws open the doors of her newly revamped home

This sweet Potts Point home has been refreshed from top to bottom, but thanks to thoughtful design and daring use of materials, it retains a glamorous old-school feel.

Creating beautiful new spaces is interior designer Alexandra Kidd’s obsession.

Her projects are exquisite — think streamlined, sleek and interesting spaces that are beautifully and carefully considered and designed.

“As a Sydney-based interior design studio, we work closely with our clients to deliver innovative design solutions,” says Alexandra.

“Each project is customised and executed with the highest level of attention to detail and quality, whether we are redesigning a single room or renovating an entire home.”

And Alexandra sets the same high bar when designing properties for herself, too. A quick walk through her stylish eastern suburbs’ apartment will bear that out.

With views over the harbour and a two-level layout, the apartment is sharp, chic and deeply modern and, yet, warm and welcoming, too.

Who lives in your home? The apartment is located in Elizabeth Bay, where I live with my husband, our daughters, six and four, and our very old golden retriever. We love the urban living, cosmopolitan lifestyle and village community. We have Rushcutters Bay and Beare Park as our back yard with no lawns to keep.

Tell us about the style of your home. A complete reinvention of the space has returned a sense of luxury and re-engaged the home with the spectacular views afforded by its location. We re-laid out bedrooms and opened up the space to light and view.

We wanted to create inner city glamour using luxe materials yet with a simple and light palette. Once the redesign started it was impossible to stop. We took the apartment back to its shell and we started over again.

What was your own design brief? Influencing all of our work is the emotional connection between the home and the inhabitant. I’m also passionate about creating a strong relationship between interior and exterior spaces. My belief is that rooms needn’t end at the windows and the doors.

What is the most unique feature of your home? I love the brass screen at the kitchen and the curved walls of the bedroom level.

What inspires you when it comes to homes and interior spaces? I love working with people and getting to understand who they are and how they live. Good design should elevate us.

What is your favourite room in your home? The kitchen. That sounds so clichéd, but it truly is the heart of the home. We put such thought and care into the kitchen design, it is no longer just a space for cooking, but an integral entertaining space, nurturing and collaborative space for everything from dinner parties to homework.

What did you find most challenging when designing your home? Making design decisions for myself. I was frozen on so many elements I’d have to take polls in my design studio.

Where is the best place to enjoy your home? In the bath in the master ensuite. A moment’s peace, total relaxation and a beautiful outlook.

Where do you like to shop for interior pieces? The list is varied and extensive. One of my go to’s is Criteria Collection in Melbourne. It has modern furniture, art and design objects from all over the world. Also, Articolo lighting, again of Melbourne, Newrybar Merchants and, of course, the fabulous locals Macleay on Manning and Becker Minty.

Who created your favourite art works and where did you source them from?

Our artwork has been collected by my husband and I individually and collectively. We have a beautiful collection of pieces that tell our story, sourced from travels, friends and galleries. I have a glass collection including local glass artists, Cathy Elliot and Ben Edols, which brings me total joy.

What is something you treasure in your home? The people in it … and also my glass and crystal collections.
