A woman has died in a head-on collision in the state’s Alpine region on Monday afternoon, while driving with a child in her car.
After reports of the crash involving a car and truck, emergency services were called to the Snowy Mountains Highway, 20km southeast of Talbingo, at about 2pm.
The North Sydney woman died at the scene. She was 48 years old.
When officers attached to the Riverina Police District arrived, they found that the northbound Toyota Corolla and a southbound truck – a prime mover – had collided head-on in the northbound lanes.
The truck then travelled over an embankment.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said five ambulance road crews were dispatched, as well as a toll rescue helicopter with a medical team onboard, and that the woman was already deceased when they arrived.
“There’s nothing we could’ve done,” she said.
The woman’s only passenger, an 11-year-old boy, was reportedly trapped for a short time before being freed by Fire and Rescue NSW.
According to the NSW Ambulance spokeswoman, he was treated by paramedics for a suspected broken arm and was flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital by the rescue helicopter. He is believed to be in stable condition.
The male driver of the heavy vehicle, also aged 48, was taken to hospital to be checked and undergo mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established by officers from the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) and the Snowy Mountains Highway remains closed between Miles Franklin Drive at Talbingo and Link Road, Adaminaby/Kosciuszko National Park.
