Ricky Evans: alleged cocaine trafficker spared custody

An alleged cocaine trafficker has been spared being locked up on remand after he contacted a top Canberra bikie while on bail to discuss ‘flyscreens’, a court has heard.

An alleged cocaine smuggler found himself back at the ACT Magistrates Court after calling a top Canberra bikie while on bail.

Kambah man Ricky Evans, 41, was spared remand by Special Magistrate Jane Campbell on Tuesday after he breached bail by contacting Rebels outlaw motorcycle club Canberra vice-president John Wright, aka John Winchester.

He pleaded guilty to breaching his bail on Tuesday.

Mr Evans had previously been granted bail on December 13 after facing one charge of trafficking a controlled drug other than cannabis.

He has not entered a plea for the drug trafficking offence.

Under Mr Evans’s bail conditions he was specifically barred from contacting Mr Wright directly or indirectly.

According to the statement of facts tendered to the court, ACT Policing had lawfully intercepted 43 phone calls between Mr Wright and Mr Evans between February 1 and December 10, 2021.

Mr Evans was arrested following a search warrant at his house on December 11 and appeared before the court on December 13, where he was granted bail.

During the search, police allegedly found 28 grams of a white powder suspected to be cocaine, $1700 in cash, prohibited fireworks and mobile phones.

The statement of facts allege police intercepted a phone call between Mr Wright and Mr Evans at 7.12am on December 15, where Mr Evans told Mr Wright he was not allowed to speak to him anymore.

Police allege the duo had four more phone conversations that same day; at 7.18am where Mr Evans allegedly told Mr Wright to “come back in half an hour”, 7.19am where the pair discussed the need for flyscreens, 9.12am where the pair discussed flyscreens again and at 7.55pm where the pair “discussed something that the police left behind”.

The statement of facts allege one more phone call occurred at 6.35am on December 16 where the pair discuss fly screens and Mr Evans asked Mr Wright if “it’s all been sorted”.

The court heard after being notified about his breach of bail, Mr Evans handed himself in at the City Police Station about 7am on Tuesday.

Mr Evans will reappear at the ACT Magistrates Court on January 11 where he is expected to enter a plea for his drug trafficking charge.
