Two women have received jail terms for their roles in a disturbing hostage situation in Canberra which led to the victim being robbed and threatened with a hammer.
Natalie Marie Hyde, 45, and Haylie Ellen Sibley, 39, were both found guilty at trial of forcible confinement and robbery following a crazed incident where a man was assaulted, accused of being an undercover cop and robbed of $50.
Sibley has already launched an appeal, while Hyde pleaded guilty to other charges of drug trafficking, possessing property suspected of being proceeds of crime and possessing a drug of dependence.
Details about the man’s one hour confinement were retold in the ACT Supreme Court on Tuesday where it was revealed Hyde, who was a drug dealer at the time, lent the man money for fuel, food along with drugs on credit.
Justice David Mossop said the 45-year-old gave the victim keys to a Conder home for him to install security cameras.
Their relationship soured on June 8, 2022 when she demanded he repay his drug debt.
The man agreed to return the keys and her cash, and was met with Sibley and a male accomplice at the Conder property later that night.
Justice Mossop said the accomplice jumped in the victim’s car and threatened him with a hammer while demanding the keys.
Sibley removed the victim’s keys from the car while the other man forced the victim inside the home.
Hyde came with two more men and questioned the victim about the money and hit him while saying “why are you lying to me?”.
The court was told the victim was forced to drink a glass of clear liquid however police were unable to find any traces of drugs in it.
The victim was questioned if he was an undercover police officer and struck by the unknown men while Sibley continued to search his car, the court heard.
Justice Mossop said the group tried to access the victim's banking on his phone until Hyde put an end to the assaults.
He was allowed to use the bathroom but was able escape through a window.
Hyde was raided by police on December 13, 2022 at her home in Conder where she was found with $10,700 in cash, 155g of meth and drug related text messages.
The court heard the 45-year-old dog groomer previously used 1.5g of ice daily but was determined to lead a positive life once released after being on remand for 483 days.
Justice Mossop said Sibley played a “peripheral role” in the scheme once the victim was forced inside the home and did not provide “muscle”.
The court heard the 39-year-old worked in real estate for 15 years and had limited contact with family and friends. She also suffered from ongoing drug use along with mental health issues.
Hyde was given a head sentenced of 30 months’ jail to be served by an intensive correction order.
Sibley was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, suspended to enter into a good behaviour order for two years.
