Matthew Mavity named new ACT Fire and Rescue chief named

The next boss of the ACT’s Fire and Rescue service has been praised as a “respected leader” within the department.

The new head honcho of ACT Fire and Rescue has been revealed as Matthew Mavity.

Mr Mavity has been an acting ACT Chief Officer for the last eight months, is set to step into the new role.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Mick Gentleman said he was pleased to see Mr Mavity continue in the role for a five-year term.

“Mr Mavity has 25 years of experience with ACT Fire and Rescue as a firefighter and has moved through the ranks in specialist fire management roles within the ACT Emergency Service Agency (ACTESA),” Mr Gentleman said.

“It is great that the next Chief Officer will be a local firefighter who has served and protected our community and will now lead the next generation of firefighters to do the same.”

ACT Emergency Services Agency Commissioner Georgeina Whelan described Mr Mavity as a “respected leader” within the fire department.

“He has actively continued to improve the service to be highly responsive and diverse, reflecting the Canberra community.”

Mr Mavity said he was committed upholding the reputation set by previous leaders within the department.

“I look forward to furthering the implementation of the Enterprise Agreement, with emphasis on health and well being and recruitment and skills maintenance,” he said.

“The community holds a great deal of trust and respect for our Fire and Rescue service, and I feel privileged to serve and protect our community in this role.”
