A man in his 20s has sadly lost his life in a deadly collision on a busy Canberra road during peak hour after his car collided with a cement truck.
Emergency services rushed to William Hovel Dr, 500m west of the Coppins Crossing intersection in Belconnen, after a blue Hyundai Getz crashed into a heavy rigid concrete pumping truck about 7am on Tuesday.
Tragically, the young man driving the Hyundai died at the scene.
The truck driver, an adult man, was assessed by paramedics and was taken to Calvary Hospital for drug and alcohol testing.
It’s understood the Hyundai had been driving and crossed onto the wrong side of the road collided head on with the truck.
Acting Inspector from ACT Road Policing Travis Mills said they were yet to formally identify the young driver.
Inspector Mills said it was regrettable there had been a fatality only 10 days into the new year after a horrific year on ACT roads in 2022 where 18 people died in traffic crashes.
“The messaging is consistent … slow down, drive to the conditions, do not be distracted while operating a motor vehicle and, quite honestly, think of your family and arrive at your destination safely,” he said.
Police were appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Major Collision police unit were investigating the fatal crash, with investigations ongoing.
