A Canberra man charged with raping a semiconscious woman said he did not apply for bail because he “didn’t think he’d get it”, a court has heard.
Holt man Joshua Ware, 36, appeared at the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday charged with reckless sexual intercourse without consent and breaching good behaviour obligations.
He did not enter any pleas.
ACT Policing will allege a woman came forward to police in February and said Mr Ware raped her while she was at a “reduced level of consciousness”.
Police told the court Mr Ware was arrested on Saturday for unrelated matters, and he was interviewed and charged over the rape allegation on Sunday.
Bail was not applied for and was formally refused by Magistrate Robert Cook.
“I didn’t apply for bail because I didn’t think I’d get it,” Mr Ware said in court.
Mr Ware will return to court on April 4.
