A syringe-wielding thief has narrowly avoided jail after sticking up a chemist in Canberra’s north.

Grace Emily Larkham and her co-accused Kiran James Eichmann robbed the Capital Chemist in O’Connor on July 10 last year.

Larkham was armed with a syringe while Eichmann held a nail gun and a hammer.

According to the statement of facts the pair demanded staff to hand over prescription medication and cash.

By the time police arrived at the scene of the robbery the pair had fled the scene in a stolen Toyota HiLux.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle in Campbell yet the driver drove away from police at high speed.

The pair were apprehended when police located the car on the Monaro Highway and used stop sticks.

After the incident police discovered the pair had also stolen jackets from Anaconda in Fyshwick worth almost $2000.

Larkham appeared at the ACT Supreme Court on Friday for sentencing after she pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, possessing a weapon with intent, minor theft and riding in a motor vehicle without consent.

Justice David Mossop told the court the syringe-wielding woman struggled with chronic schizophrenia as a result of her drug abuse, and said Larkham was as a “crossroads” in her life.

Justice Mossop said after spending time remanded in custody Larkham had attended a rehabilitation centre to address her drug use.

He said she had made efforts to improve her life and said he was concerned her work to improve her self would be at risk if she returned to custody.

Justice Mossop sentenced Larkham to a 26-month intensive corrections order, backdated to account for 121 days spent in custody.

Larkham is required to perform 160 hours of community service and must abstain from illicit drug use.

Her co-accused Eichmann has pleaded guilty to seven charges laid against him and will be sentenced at a later date.
