A professional kickboxer facing a slew of weapons and drug charges has made a bid for bail, citing training to defend her title as a ‘special and exceptional” circumstance.
Kaleen woman Felicity Loiterton, 28, is charged with five counts of unauthorised possession or use of prohibited weapons, two counts of possessing ammunition generally, possessing a drug of dependence, possessing an unregistered or prohibited firearm, trafficking a controlled drug other than cannabis, possessing a declared substance and drug driving.
Ms Loiterton has not entered any pleas and has been in custody since being arrested on Sunday July 10 after being denied bail last week.
According to a statement from ACT Policing, officers allegedly found a gel-blaster gun and gel blaster cartridges, which had the appearance of a shotgun, in addition to two tasers, two prohibited knives, live shotgun cartridges, live 0.22 rounds, commercial grade fireworks and modified fireworks during a search warrant.
On Monday the woman made a renewed bid for bail.
Due to the seriousness of the charges laid against Ms Loiterton, she must prove the existence of special and exceptional circumstances.
Her lawyer told the court her client looked after her two children and said Loiterton needed to begin training to defend her kickboxing title.
The lawyer said the objective seriousness of Loiterton alleged offences were low, and said if convicted a term of full term imprisonment would be unlikely.
“I don’t share your confidence,” Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker said.
The lawyer also said if granted bail Loiterton would stay with prosocial family members interstate who assured the court they “wouldn’t hesitate” to call police if she broke bail conditions.
Chief Magistrate Walker ultimately refused bail.
Ms Loiterton will return to court on August 1.
