A critical incident investigation has been opened after an elderly woman was injured during an interaction with police at a Cooma aged care facility.

Police were called to the Yallambee Lodge in the early hours of Wednesday morning during which a 95-year-old woman was injured while interacting with officers.

NSW Police say the woman was taken to Cooma District Hospital following where her condition is being monitored.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council runs the facility.

Its chief operating officer Jeff Morgan said the facility’s carers and nurses followed procedures during the incident and did what was needed in the circumstances.

He said the incident would also need to be reported to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

Mr Morgan said with the matter now under investigation by police and out of respect for the family, he could not offer further comment.

According to council’s website, Yallambee Lodge was built and opened in 1995 and is a 40-bed centre with 38 permanent beds and two respite beds.

Several services are offered to residents including palliative care to those with complex personal and care needs.

Registered nurses, enrolled nurses and carers work at the centre with a registered nurse on call 24 hours a day, according to their website.

A critical incident team will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident with the investigation subject to an independent review.

Police said there were no further details are available at this time.
