Canberra records first e-scooter fatality

Canberra has recorded its first e-scooter road fatality after a 19-year-old woman was struck by a car while crossing the road.

Laura Wallace has been identified as the 12th person to die on Canberra’s roads in 2022, after she passed away on Monday.

At 3.10pm on Sunday police and emergency services were called to the scene of the collision at the corner of Drakeford Drive and O’Halloran Circuit in the suburb of Kambah, in the Tuggeranong region of Canberra.

A statement from ACT Policing stated Ms Wallace was not wearing a helmet and had been thrown a long distance across the intersection following the crash.

Following the crash Ms Wallace was transported to The Canberra Hospital with serious head and leg injuries, and was pronounced dead the following day

ACT Policing Officer in charge of road policing, Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson, fronted the media on Monday telling reporters investigations were continuing into the tragic incident.

Inspector Hutcheson said the woman had been crossing the roadway, however it was unclear at this stage who had the right of way.

Inspector Hutcheson said the driver of the car and several other witnesses assisted the woman following the crash.

“That goes to show it’s not just the impact (the crash) had on the community,” he said.

“It’s not just emergency service workers, it’s not just the people directly involved the collision (it’s also affected) people who witnessed this event.”

Inspector Hutcheson said he was unable to comment on whether any charges had or would be laid in relation to the incident.

He told reporters the woman was a Canberra local and said family and friends had been notified of her death.

Inspector Hutcheson gave a grave warning to vulnerable road users.

“We can confirm the woman was riding a personal e-scooter and was not wearing a helmet,” he said.

“We remind vulnerable road users (people using) e-scooters, scooters, bicycles or skateboards to slow down, check the road before you enter or cross it, and please wear a helmet.

“This is another tragic and preventable death of a young Canberran on ACT roads.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

People who witnessed the collision or have dashcam footage from the incident are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
