A Sydneysider who allegedly assaulted a woman in her sixties has been extradited to the ACT for the second time after missing a court appearance.

Cameron Robert McKay 35, from the Sydney suburb of Kings Langley, has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, failing to comply with an order made by a magistrate, and a previous charge of failing to appear after a bail undertaking.

According to a statement by ACT Policing, the assault charges relate to an alleged incident in February 2022 where a 64 year-old woman who was working at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) was assaulted by McKay during a “disturbance”.

Police allege the woman suffered fractures to both of her wrists which required surgery.

On Friday when he appeared at ACT Magistrates Court Magistrate Louise Taylor charged Mr McKay with new charge of failing to appear, after he did not appear at court on October 7.

A statement from ACT Policing stated NSW Police arrested Mr McKay on Wednesday night.

Following his arrest Mr McKay appeared at Blacktown Local Court where he was extradited to the ACT.

Police allege this is the second time he has been extradited to the ACT for failing to appear, stating he was previously extradited to the ACT on July 28 after failing to attend court appearances in June and July.

Mr Mckay’s lawyer made a bid for bail, telling the court her client had been suffering mental health issues and had recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

She said Mr McKay was receiving care from a psychiatrist and that she was given instructions that Mckay’s family would assist him in ensuring he return to court, and said her client “understands the need to come to court”

“— All of the evidence is to the contrary,” Ms Taylor replied.

In response to the submissions about family support the magistrate said “why do the family care now’.

Mr Mckay’s lawyer said her client was “ignorant of court processes” but was “doing his best”.

Ms Taylor ultimately refused Mr McKay bail stating she had “no confidence” that he’d come back to court if bailed.

His case will return to court for a pre-hearing mention on October 28.
