Bruce Paix: former military doctor hit with assault charge

A former military doctor who travelled from South Australia to participate in the Convoy to Canberra protests has been hit with a fresh assault charge.

A hearing date has been set for a military doctor cum Convoy to Canberra protester who allegedly drove at a police officer in February.

Adelaide man Bruce Paix, 57, fronted the ACT Magistrates court via telephone on Monday for a pre hearing mention.

Mr Paix previously pleaded not guilty to furious, reckless or dangerous driving and was hit with a new charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He pleaded not guilty to the new charge.

Mr Paix’s lawyer, Michael Kukulies-Smith from Kamy Saeedi Law, told the court he expected the hearing into the case would take one and a half days to two days.

Magistrate James Stewart set the hearing dates for November 14 and 15 at the ACT Magistrates Court.

The court heard the latest assault charge was in relation to the same incident as the driving charge.

Police allege on February 5, Mr Paix drove around a traffic control officer, during Convoy to Canberra protest activity of road due to protest activity.

It is alleged his car made contact with the police officer.

When Mr Paix first appeared the court heard the former military doctor previously held the rank of Wing Commander in the air force.

The court heard Mr Paix, who previously studied epidemiology and anaesthesiology at Adelaide University, became involved in the protest movement after losing his job at the Australian Defence Force after refusing to comply with the vaccination mandate.

The defendant’s bail will continue until his hearing begins in November.
