A Kaleen man’s spree of jealous rage where he subjected his former partner to a campaign of “domestic terrorism” through threats and stalking has been heard in court.
Brad Jewell’s ex-girlfriend suffered through several weeks of domestic violence threats which led to her being placed in emergency accommodation to escape his clutches.
The 43-year-old’s spree of paranoid and controlling behaviour was detailed in the ACT Supreme Court on Tuesday, after he pleaded guilty to stalking and threatening to kill.
Agreed facts tendered say Jewell and his former partner were in a relationship when she began to see Jewell become “increasingly possessive and paranoid”.
The court heard for several weeks in March, Jewell called and texted the victim with threats. She told him to stop contacting her.
Court documents state Jewell became “abusive and obsessive” towards her and threatened to come to her home and kill her.
Some of his disturbing texts include “you f---ed up”, “you’re going to do everything I f---ing ask tonight” and “you are done I want to watch you burn”.
About midnight on March 7, the 43-year-old came inside her home with a large black metal knife before he grabbed her, pointed the knife at her body and said he was going to kill her.
“The victim was utterly terrified and prepared herself to die in that moment,” the facts say.
Police say the woman was forced to sit with the former Kaleen man for an hour while he told her how “s--t” she was and how it was “all her fault” because she wouldn’t listen to him.
He eventually left however the victim was too frightened to call the police.
These phone calls, texts and home visits continued until she was placed in emergency housing. He was eventually arrested on March 30.
Prosecutor Sofia Janakovic told the court on Tuesday Jewell was conducting “domestic terrorism” against his ex-partner due to his “disturbing level of entitlement and possessiveness to the victim”.
Ms Janakovic said the 43-year-old wanted to “control” her and “dictate what she did”.
Defence lawyer Sam Lynch said Jewell had undiagnosed post traumatic stress disorder at the time which correlated with his offending due to his “poor emotional regulation”.
Mr Lynch said Jewell accepted responsibility for his actions and felt like he deserved his time in custody, which had been since March 30.
Justice McWilliam will hand down her sentence on November 23.
