Sexual consent round table

A man who allegedly groped the bum of a teenage girl at Gungahlin Village shopping complex has been granted bail.

Moncrieff man Kwabena Jesse Amoo-Appau, 31, appeared at the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday facing one charge of an act of indecency without consent.

Magistrate Glenn Theakston granted Mr Amoo-Appau bail.

Mr Amoo Appau has not made a plea.

According to the statement of facts tendered to the court, the teenager was walking through the shopping complex on November 11 at 6.20pm when she realised someone was following her.

She allegedly left the complex near the First Choice Liquor shop and walked towards Hinder St.

Police allege just before the girl reached Hinder St, Mr Amoo-Appau and grabbed her bum with his left hand.

She then turned to her left and walked on to Hinder St and the defendant turned right on to Efkarpidis St.

The complainant was soon picked up by her mother and then the pair began to drive to locate Mr Amoo-Appau.

The defendant was found walking towards Gungahlin Marketplace and then the complainant’s mother said to him: “Excuse me mate did you just touch my daughter?”

The defendant allegedly said “yes”.

“That’s not OK, she’s just a little girl,” the complainant’s mother allegedly replied.

The man then allegedly said: “Yes, sorry.”

The girl and her mother returned home and reported the matter to police.

At 12.04am, Mr Amoo-Appau’s mother reported him missing to Gungahlin police station.

Police facts allege the defendant appeared at the station soon after and allegedly reported that he was hearing voices which were telling him to go to a brothel, to attack and steal from children and to follow people.

The statement of facts allege he told police he had been walking around since 7pm and wanted assistance from them.

ACT Ambulance Service soon transported him to Canberra Hospital.

On November 12, police interviewed Mr Amoo-Appau. Police later obtained CCTV footage from First Choice Liquor Gungahlin from the night and allegedly identified the complainant and Mr Amoo-Appau.

On December 3, cops searched his Moncrieff home where they found a yellow hoodie and a pair of red and grey DC brand sneakers which matched the clothing worn during the alleged incident.

Mr Amoo-Appau was arrested over a month later on January 4.

He will reappear at the ACT Magistrates Court on January 27.
