Alexander Matters: Political staffer’s rape case heard in ACT Supreme Court

The ACT Supreme Court has heard the case of a former federal Labor staffer accused of raping two women.

The case against a former federal Labor staffer accused of raping two women has been heard in the ACT Supreme Court for the first time.

Acton man Alexander Louis Christopher Matters, 20, is charged with three counts of sexual intercourse without consent and an act of indecency without consent.

Mr Matters was excused from appearing at court during the brief mention on Thursday morning.

ACT Supreme Court registrar Jayne Reece adjourned the matter to next month and excused the defendant from his next appearance.

Mr Matters pleaded not guilty to all charges when he appeared at the ACT Magistrates Court on October 12.

His case was committed to trial on March 1.

The Australian National University law student previously worked for federal Labor MP David Smith who represents the ACT seat of Bean.

After he was arrested in September, Mr Matters was stood down from his job.

He was initially charged with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent relating to an alleged incident in April.

Following his arrest another woman brought further charges of sexual intercourse without consent and an act of indecency without consent relating to an alleged incident in May 2021.

His case will return to the ACT Supreme Court on April 14.
