A former Labor staffer accused of raping two women has had his case committed to trial in the ACT Supreme Court.

Acton man Alexander Louis Christopher Matters, 20, is charged with three counts of sexual intercourse without consent and an act of indecency without consent.

Mr Matters pleaded not guilty to all charges when he appeared at the ACT Magistrates court on October 12.

The former Labor staffer appeared in court on via telephone during the brief committal hearing on Tuesday.

When asked by Special Magistrate Margaret Hunter if he was the defendant, Matters simply said “yes I am.”

As the magistrate read out the charge list, Mr Matters said “mm hmm” to indicate he understood the charges.

“I commit you to trial in the Supreme Court,” Ms Hunter said after she finished reading materials from the case.

She told Mr Matters his bail would continue until his next court appearance with the new condition that he notify the Supreme Court registrar if he changed address.

“Ah ha,” the defendant replied.

Ms Hunter also said an alibi notice would be sent to the court.

“Thank you very much, have a good one,” Mr Matters said before hanging up.

He will face the ACT Supreme Court on March 10.

Mr Matters was charged with the first two rape charges in September relating to an alleged incident in April last year.

The Australian National University law student was stood down from his job at the office of federal Labor MP and member for the ACT electorate of Bean David Smith following his arrest in September.

When he last appeared at court in October Matters was hit with fresh charges of sexual intercourse without consent and an act of indecency without consent after another woman came forward with allegations against him regarding an alleged incident in May 2021.
