Top Australian BMX rider, Nutri-Grain TV ad star and movie stuntman Rhys Karl Kember has been hit with child porn and child abuse material charges after police spent months going through his phone.

Kember, 32, first faced court in May when he was charged with online child sex grooming and online child sex procurement.

Those charges related to allegations Kember messaged a teenage girl on Instagram and encouraged her to give him “head”.

Kember was the target of a police sting, in which investigators posing as a 14-year-old girl and asked Kember could buy alcohol so she could take it to school camp.

It was alleged Kember asked for photos of the 14-year-old’s breasts, and wrote: “You asked what I want, maybe you will get what you want”.

On Thursday, Kember was charged with three fresh counts of online child sex grooming, two counts of using a carriage service for child abuse material, and three counts of using a carriage service for child pornography material.

Prosecutors also withdrew the original grooming charge.

He did not enter pleas to the fresh charges during the brief hearing in the ACT Magistrates Court.

He has previously pleaded not guilty to the original online child sex procurement charge.

The precise details of the fresh charges were not aired in court on Thursday, but are the result of a detailed AFP search of Kember’s phone and social media accounts.

Kember’s defence lawyer, Adrian McKenna, said he needed three weeks to get instructions from his client about the new charges.

Kember was also given permission to move to an address in Jindabyne.

Since being charged, family-friendly cereal brand Kellogg’s has distanced itself from Kember, ordering TV ads featuring him to be taken off the air.

Kember returns to court in November.
