Goulburn detectives are ramping up their investigation into seven “deliberately lit” fires around the town late last year, revealing three men were spotted near the blazes.

The Hume police district has established Strike Force Cloete to probe the fires, lit between November 19 and December 8 last year, and has branded the firebugs’ actions as “distressing”.

Hume police district Detective acting Inspector Matthew Packham said investigators wanted to speak with three men seen near the fires.

The fires burnt near Ross St, Tully Park, Brewer St and Gorman Rd.

Detective acting Inspector Packham urged the men to come forward and for any members of the public with information to report it to police.

“Information provided to police from members of the public can help us identify and suppress firebugs before they start lighting,” acting Inspector Packham said.

“It’s distressing to see so many fires being deliberately lit, particularly after recent events in our region.

“I want to urge members of the community – if you see something, say something. If you have suspicions at all and wish to report a crime, don’t take the risk – contact police or Crime Stoppers.”

Any information reported to police will be treated confidentially.

Crime Stoppers can be reached on 1800 333 000 and the Goulburn Police station can be reached on 4824 0799.
