Kevin Walters’ “coach whisperer” and Barefoot Blues in firing line in Rugby League: The Musical ahead of Origin round two

The man behind the famed That’s In Queensland video is now helping State of Origin fanatics see the funny side of the series with his satirical sketch show Rugby League: The Musical

Rugby League: The Musical

As the rivalry between the Blues and Maroons reaches fever pitch ahead of State of Origin round two tomorrow, at least one man is able to make light of the crucial contest.

Denis Carnahan, the comedian behind the viral video That’s In Queensland, said the “pantomime of the Origin series is a dream come true” for his hilarious satirical sketch show Rugby League: The Musical.

Queensland coach Kevin Walters and his $5500-an-hour “coach whisperer” Bradley Charles Stubbs gave him irresistible material for a new song; I Can’t Believe How Crazy Kevvy’s Gone, which he will perform to the tune of Rick Springfield’s classic Jessie’s Girl.

He also pokes fun at NSW Coach Brad Fittler and his “Barefoot Blues” after the team were spotted walking around without shoes and socks for almost an hour at Coogee Oval “to absorb magical energies from the soil”.

“And then of course, with proven shoe throwers James Maloney and Ben Hunt playing each other, it’s the Battle of The Boot Burglars,” Mr Carnahan said.

The NRL’s “major villains” Cam Smith and Paul Gallen will of course be in the firing line as is pretty much everyone else except the Canberra Raiders.

Born and Bred in Canberra, Carnahan’s bleeds lime green and doesn’t decide whether to celebrate, sulk or feel proud, down or filthy until he’s watched coach Ricky Stuart’s post-game press conference.

“If Ricky is unhappy in the presser, I’m unhappy for the week,” Carnahan said.

“If he’s proud despite a loss, I steel myself to work hard all week to make it better.”

The musical features satirical songs and parodies about League’s many colourful characters and controversies, brilliantly blended with videos, live sketch comedy, impersonations and stand-up in a one man live show.

Punters can expect to be transported joyously and musically through all the narratives of villainy, conspiracy, controversy melodrama and pantomime that Rugby League provides.

The musical will tour the country and head to The Street Theatre in Canberra on July 27.

Serious review and analysis of the game, the scores, the ladder and where the season is going — not so much.

The Musical is in Canberra at The Street Theatre on July 27 and 13 other venues across the country starting with Lizottes in Newcastle on July 5 and ending at The Manly Leagues Club on August 23.

There will also be shows in Cronulla, Wollongong, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Griffith and Wagga Wagga in July and August.
