Satudarah presidents Dean Reid, David Evans jailed over home invasion, told to grow up

Two former bikie gang chapter presidents have copped a spray in court, told they will keep ending up in jail unless they decide to grow up and start to “be adults”.

Two top former Canberra bikies will remain behind bars until at least 2022, and have been told they need to grow up and “be adults” if they want to stay out of jail.

Former Satudarah bikie gang Canberra chapter presidents Dean Reid, 31, and David Evans, 33, were both sentenced to hefty jail terms on Monday after previously admitting to their roles as hired muscle in a drug- and guns-linked underworld standover job.

The attack saw Reid hold a knife to a man’s throat, and Evans break his leg by smashing it repeatedly with an electric guitar.

Reid, a top former boxer, was also sentenced for stealing the man’s car and showing up at hospital and telling him to withdraw the statement he had made to police.

The attack was led by Canberra underworld matriarch Sharon Stott, who was earlier this year released from jail amid fears she might contract coronavirus.

Stott and Evans are awaiting a verdict in a judge-alone trial stemming from another alleged standover job.

Justice Chrissa Loukas-Karlsson on Monday said both men needed to use their time in jail productively and turn away from their lives of crime.

“Neither of you have had an easy start in life, but that is no excuse for violence against others, do you understand that?” she said.

“You would not want the people you love … to be treated the way you treated this victim.

“You can do better than this, you have to do better than this.”

One of Evans’s associates jostled with security guards after court after he jumped over a row of seats, stepped around a barrier and pushed his way forward to give him a handshake.

Reid’s former partner, Samantha Catanzariti, who gave glowing character evidence for him, became visibly emotional as Justice Loukas-Karlsson sentenced him to a maximum five years and 11 months jail.

Evans was sentenced to just over four years and 11 months.

Justice Loukas-Karlsson said to Reid and Evans, both of whom have been heavy drug users, “drugs are not the answer, they have never been the answer.

“Being an adult is the answer.

“That’s what the two of you have to do from now on.”

Both men will be eligible for parole in May 2022.
