A former “super brain” university student allegedly filmed himself installing a hidden camera in a university shower cubicle, a court has heard.

Former Australian National University maths student Juqi Huang, 22 fronted the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where the court heard the camera could have been in the cubicle undetected for as long as 10 days.

He did not enter a plea to the charge of indecently attempting to observe another person.

Huang, a Chinese national, is a former president of the ANU Super Brain Society, a club which dedicates itself to “brain development”, “finding ANU students with extraordinary brain power”, “exploring the world of genius” and puzzles.

Prosecutor Brigid Atkinson said police investigations were ongoing, and would see Huang’s laptop and phone searched for images from the device.

She said there was a risk Huang might flee from Canberra, and that he would have no ties to the university since he was going to be expelled from his accommodation.

She said the police case against Huang was “strong”, with security cameras showing him going into the bathroom.

The hidden camera is alleged to have recorded Huang installing it in place, according to court records.

Huang has no criminal record, and if the university expels him it could see his visa cancelled and see him deported unless the authorities issue a special visa to keep him in Australia while his charges are dealt with, the court heard.

She said if Huang were granted bail, he might remotely access video files and tamper with evidence.

“Police suspect there might be further images on the defendant’s devices,” she said.

If found guilty, Huang faces up to two years in jail.

Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker said there was only a small risk of Huang tampering with evidence.

She banned him from being on campus, within 100 metres of two alleged victims, and ordered he lived where ACT corrective services tell him to.

The university has said it will help him find a place to live off campus.

Huang returns to court on July 22.
