A man charged with rape tried to make a low-key exit from court in high-vis workwear by hiding his face behind a large floppy hat.
Darcy Edward Page, of Greenway, fronted the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday after a night in the lockup where he was formally charged with a dozen child sex offences, including rape.
Page was granted bail, which was not opposed, and did not enter pleas to the eleven counts of sexual intercourse with a person under 16 and one count of rape.
He hobbled from court on crutches, wearing a moon boot on one foot and a basketball sneaker on the other, as a supporter tried unsuccessfully to shield his face with a large hat.
Page’s alleged offences span between mid-2018 and early 2019.
Page’s lawyer, Tim Sharman, said his client had recently been under the knife and was not working.
Special Magistrate Margaret Hunter granted Page bail on strict conditions, including to not go to two suburbs and to report to police.
Ms Hunter issued a stern warning to Page that he would end up back behind bars if he tried to contact his alleged victim.
“You can’t get any of your friends or family to, that includes Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, all those things,” Ms Hunter said.
Ms Hunter said if he did, Page would “stay (in jail) until the end of the matter”.
Page did not comment outside court as he hid his face behind his supporter’s large hat.
