WOOLWORTHS’ monopoly in Canberra’s inner north will soon come to an end after the ACT Government approved plans for a new Coles supermarket at the Dickson shops.

Work is set to start in the next six months on the new store on Antill St with completion due about two years after construction begins.

Planning Minister Mick Gentleman has approved the development application for the mixed use development comprising of two, seven storey buildings containing 140 apartments, the supermarket, retail space and 655 carparking spaces.

Mr Gentleman said the proposal comes with amendments to deliver better public spaces and more parking following years of discussion and community engagement.

“Many local residents have been calling for a new supermarket in Dickson Centre to cater for a growing population,” he said.

“The decision to call in the project will provide certainty to locals and business owners in the area.

“The Government has taken into account community concerns such as temporary off-site parking during construction, traffic management and the preservation of the Dickson Library.”

Hundreds of jobs will be created during construction along with 164 retail jobs once the supermarket is complete.

Coles Property Group consulted extensively with the community following their original development proposal in 2016 and has made several changes.

Public feedback has informed the new development’s design, which will create better public spaces in the centre, including more footpaths and improved landscaping.
