An allegedly disturbed man accused of brandishing a replica revolver in the middle of Canberra spent the day going around the city unsuccessfully searching for a woman, before trying to goad armed police into shooting him.
Brett John Scott, 36, of Belconnen in the ACT, allegedly made his way into Bunda St in the Canberra CBD with the weapon just before 11pm on Monday night.
In a statement, ACT Police said they would allege Scott aimed the firearm at the police who were first called to the scene.
A marathon negotiation followed, involving hostage and crisis negotiators.
Officers from the AFP’s highly trained Specialist Protective Services and Tactical Response Team also arrived at the scene.
Scott was arrested shortly after 1am, with no injuries to police.
During the arrest, police confirmed the revolver Scott was brandishing was a replica.
Scott, visibly distraught, appeared in the ACT Magistrates court on Tuesday where Magistrate Bernadette Boss ordered he be taken to a hospital for a doctor to decide whether he needed immediate mental health treatment or care.
Scott is charged with a string of offences, including using an offensive weapon, acting with intent to cause public alarm, assaulting frontline community service providers and robbing Aldi Supermarket of two 700ml bottles of Bluegrass bourbon.
Scott made a series of disturbing social media posts in the hours leading up to his alleged spree, hinting at what was to come.
Scott, wearing a collared shirt, appeared in court by video link where he did not appear to follow proceedings, instead crying, yanking at his hair and burying his face in his hands before being led away by guards
He will return to court following the mental health assessment.
