A fugitive, a south coast tradie turned alleged drug dealer, a cat-loving disability pensioner and a teenage girl are accused of leading police on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen car north of Canberra.
Tradie Brent Guerin, 32, and disability pensioner James Killip, 24 were both refused bail at the Queanbeyan Magistrates Court on Thursday after being arrested hiding in bushland at Sutton.
Fugitive Kye Rowe, 20, also faced court on Thursday afternoon for an extradition application to the ACT, where he is wanted “for a number of offences”.
He is expected to be charged in the ACT overnight and appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday.
According to NSW Police, the three men and a 16-year-old girl, who cannot be named, were spotted on the Federal Hwy north of Canberra in a Ford sedan that had been reported stolen in the ACT.
The car pulled over on Sutton Rd after a brief pursuit, where all four allegedly fled into bushland and were arrested.
Killip, of Queanbeyan, was refused bail despite his legal aid lawyer arguing he needed to be at home to look after his therapy cat, Shadow. He is charged only with riding in the stolen car.
Killip told his lawyer he was sitting at home, bored, when a “friend of a friend”, Rowe, showed up and asked if he wanted to go for a ride.
The court heard Killip only found out the car was stolen after he was arrested.
“He hasn’t knowingly committed an offence,” his lawyer said.
After he was refused bail, Killip said: “I need to go home to my cat.”
“I don’t want to be locked up with these people … these people scare me.
“I need to see my cat.”
Guerin, a father of four who was until recently running a painting business at Batemans Bay, was also refused bail after the court heard he had previously served a year in jail over a police chase.
Both Guerin, of Lilli Pilli, and the teenage girl were allegedly found with ice, cannabis and cash which police suspect is the proceeds of crime.
The teenage girl is on police bail and will appear in Children’s Court later this month.
