A key prosecution witness in the trial of Comanchero bikie Axel Sidaros has been accused of being a white supremacist and giving evidence because he doesn’t like people who aren’t “pure white blood”.
The witness, a former prison inmate who can’t be named, once served time in a cell near Sidaros in Canberra’s jail while Sidaros was on remand.
The former inmate said he and the bikie were talking “verbal dribble” while bored one day when Sidaros admitted to his role in the attempted hit-job on the gang’s former chapter president Peter Zdravkovic.
Sidaros, 25, has pleaded not guilty to a string of charges including attempted murder, and denies being one of the four masked men who stormed Mr Zdravkovic’s home, opening fire and setting his cars alight.
Sidaros’s barrister, Murugan Thangaraj SC, asked the former inmate whether he “didn’t like (Sidaros) because he wasn’t a pure white blood”.
Sidaros comes from a prominent and well-respected Egyptian family.
The former inmate said he had only ever used the Nazi-inspired insults against a young girl as a “joke” among mates.
The harassment ultimately saw the former inmate prosecuted.
“You abused a young Jewish girl because of her religion,” Mr Thangaraj said.
The former inmate responded: “Umm, as I said … it was a very, very, very sad attempt at a joke”.
The former inmate also denied being a heavy drug user, but the court heard he had a drug overdose last week.
The former inmate also denied being a liar and said to Mr Thangaraj: “You defend paedophiles for a living mate”.
“Mate, you’re a liar.
“I think if anyone’s a liar, I don’t know, let’s not get into it, I can come see you”.
The former inmate denied he was threatening Mr Thangaraj.
The former inmate said he had previously racked up drug debts to members of the local Comanchero chapter, who he claims were all his friends.
Sidaros’s trial, before Justice David Mossop, sitting without a jury, continues.
