A decorated federal police officer allegedly forced a woman’s hand onto his penis and pulled her pants down after being punched in the face.

Ivan Bruno Kovacic, 50, fronted Canberra Magistrates Court on Monday after spending the night in the police lockup.

Kovacic, who has not entered a plea, was charged on Sunday with committing an act of indecency without consent.

Court records show police will allege Kovacic, who boasts a string of bravery citations, started “playfully punching” a man in the body, having earlier crashed a group’s drinking session in the spa bath in the outdoor communal area of a city apartment block.

Police say the man, in self-defence, punched Kovacic in the face, leaving him bleeding.

The alleged victim, who is a lesbian and “has never been sexually active with men or interested in men” went to help Kovacic clean blood off his face.

“ (Kovacic) then pulled out his erect penis, grabbed (the woman’s) left hand and … rubbed her hand on his penis several times,” police will allege.

The woman told police she “froze” before pulling her hand away.

Police allege in court documents: “The defendant has pulled (the woman’s) pants down over her bottom … (she) has managed to get off the defendant and got out of his apartment”.

Kovacic was on Monday granted strict bail.

In a statement, an AFP spokesman said the agency was “assessing whether to suspend the officer”.

Kovacic will return to court at a later date.
