Freedom Salon in Bowral named best hairdresser in the Southern Highlands

A hair salon that treats staff and clients as part of the family has been crowned the best hairdresser in the Southern Highlands.

Freedom Salon is a Southern Highlands institution, having shaped the hairstyles of countless locals in its 30-year tenure in Springett’s Arcade. The salon has established a winning reputation over three decades, so it comes as no surprise it has been voted the best hairdresser in the region for 2021.

The award marks a year of partnership between Debbie Hills and head stylist Marco Akay, who brings a “fresh approach” to the salon.

“Marco is taking the salon forward as it continues to evolve all the time,” Ms Hills said.

It’s a partnership forged in the pandemic and it has served the salon well.

“Covid has had its challenges, but we stay positive and we’ve been lucky with our loyal clientele,” Ms Hills said.

She said Freedom Salon focuses on the simple aim of providing “good service and high end hairdressing” to clients.

Whether it’s opening early so clients can pop in before work or ensuring their highly experienced staff use the best Kerastse products, Freedom prioritises good customer service.

As an long-established local business, community is integral to Freedom Salon. From schools to charities, the salon focuses on giving back to the Southern Highlands.

“We try to give back to our community and support our local community,” Ms Hills said.

“We have generations of people coming back with their families, which is beautiful to see.”

This is likely due to the family-like atmosphere of the salon itself, in which the clients and staff are all treated with friendly familiarity.

The elegant interior of Freedom Hair Design has been recently renovated.

“The salon runs as a family. It’s a lovely combination of old and young,” Ms Hills said.

“Our clients are part of our Freedom family.”

Ever humble, the pair said it was a “real privilege” to learn their salon had won the title of best hairdresser in the Southern Highlands.

“We would like to say thank you to everyone that nominated us and we couldn’t be happier that the community values us as much as we value them,” they said.
