The Burrawang Village Hotel is famed for its cosy atmosphere and picturesque setting, so it comes as no surprise the pub has been voted by locals as the best bar in the Southern Highlands.
The Burrawang (as it’s abbreviated by locals) embodies the best of the Highlands with its combination of heritage, charm, and lush views of the surrounding countryside.
The 1920s building encompasses the historic charm of Burrawang Village and creates a cosy atmosphere, which is only enhanced by the warm decor. The building and grounds are reminiscent of an English country manor, with its fireplace and the outdoor seating overlooking the green hills.
Despite that impression, the pub manager Rat said the Burrawang is decidedly against putting on airs.
“Not trying to be too pretentious I think is a positive,” he said.
“When people travel, I think they like a bit of an authentic feel.”
Authentic is very apt for the Burrawang, where you can sip a cocktail on the expansive green lawn while watching nearby farmers tend to their land. Locals have even been known to ride their horses into the back area and then dismount for a meal and a drink.
Rat said the Burrawang focuses on a “chilled country vibe” which makes all guests feel welcome – even the four-legged ones.
The pub is a staple on lists of where to eat and drink in the Southern Highlands, with tourists flocking there every weekend for the picturesque views. Despite the attention from out-of-towners, Rat said the pub has its stalwart local fans as well.
Locals night on Thursday night brings in a bustling crowd for the Badge Draw and the meal deals. The food at the Burrawang is classic tasty pub food with parmies, burgers and salads.
Rat said the emphasis is on championing quality local produce in both food and drink selections. Drinks include wines and beer produced in the Southern Highlands and produce is sourced from local providers, all of which adds to the authentic village charm.
According to Rat, what really sets the Burrawang apart is the “best staff in the Highlands obviously”. While the tone is joking, the words ring true.
The pub is a family-run business focused on interacting with the community and their success is obvious in its enduring popularity with both locals and visitors. They now have an award for the best bar in the Southern Highlands to prove it.
