Dean Mazuran charged with growing and supplying cannabis

A man allegedly used a home on the outskirts of Sydney to cultivate 189 cannabis plants in a “sophisticated set-up” rigged with stolen electricity, a court has heard.

A Bargo man has been refused bail after police allege he was using a south western Sydney home to cultivate nearly 200 cannabis plants in a “sophisticated set-up” rigged with stolen electricity.

Dean George Mazuran, 30, appeared via video link in Picton Local Court after being arrested on eight charges of cultivating and supplying drugs from a home in Currans Hill.

Police stopped Mr Mazuran as he was pulling out of the driveway of a Currans Hill home they were intending to raid on the afternoon of July 8.

Police allege they found four resealable plastic bags of 3.5 grams of meth in a lockbox in his car, along with $430, which they allege is money he gained from committing criminal offences.

Officers allege they discovered 3kg of cannabis in vacuum-sealed bags in the back of the car, along with numerous Bunnings receipts for items police state are “generally used in a hydroponic set up”.

When executing their search warrant on the home, police allege they found a “sophisticated hydroponic set up” with 189 individually potted cannabis plants.

“The premises had been clearly erected to cultivate cannabis plants,” police state in their case against Mr Mazuran.

Police allege they found nine rooms had been constructed inside the house, eight of which contained cannabis plants. The ninth room contained drying racks and a vacuum-bag sealing device, according to police.

According to police, there was an intricate automated irrigation system rigged throughout the house with electrical lighting and halogen lights to assist plant growth. A representative of Endeavour Energy told police the electricity used to power the system was stolen using an electrical bypass.

During the raid, police allegedly seized 8kg of cannabis in sealed bags and 2.9 grams of meth which had been lying on the coffee table.

Mr Mazuran was charged with taking part in enhanced indoor cannabis cultivation, possessing an illicit drug, knowingly dealing with the proceeds of a crime, using electricity without authority, failing to comply with a public health requirement, not complying with a noticed direction, and three counts of supplying a prohibited drug.

Mr Mazuran’s lawyer John Overall told the court there was no evidence indicating how long his client had been at the house and no proof he had participated in the cultivation of the plants.

Although he agreed Mr Mazuran was a drug user, he said the evidence for the charges was tenuous and his client would likely be exonerated.

“The accused would be foolish to abscond when he is aware that he may be found not guilty and has already served part of his sentence while on remand,” Mr Overall said.

However, Magistrate Mark Douglass determined Mr Mazuran posed an unacceptable risk to the community and refused to grant bail.

Mr Mazuran will appear in Picton Local Court on October 12 via video link.
