Braiden Walker sentenced to jail after drunk fight in Moss Vale

“What the f**k are you doing you f**ing pussies, we’re punching on”. This is the taunt that a 20-year-old man used to start a boozy brawl in the streets of Moss Vale.

Does alcohol make us violent?

A young man has admitted to kicking off an alcohol-fuelled brawl during a night out in Moss Vale.

Braiden Walker, 20, has pleaded guilty to affray and having a dangerous implement in a public place, after the boozy brawl late last year.

According to court documents, Walker approached a Moss Vale pub on November 26, 2020, with Hayden Roberts, 19, and Andre Roux, 19. Walker confronted two other men to inform them they were “punching on”.

When Zachary Anthon, 18, and Kyle McGuire, also 18, refused to engage, police will allege all five men got into a heated argument.

Court documents reveal there is CCTV footage that shows the group walking down Waite St in Moss Vale. Walker admitted to egging the fight on, saying “what the f**k are you doing you f**ing pussies, we’re punching on”.

Walker agreed that when Mr Anthon refused to fight, Walker punched him in the face and made his nose bleed.

While Mr Anthon and Mr McGuire continued down Browley St and tried to distance themselves, court documents show that Walker continued to follow them.

“Come on c**s, come one you f**king pussies, we’re gunna get ya, we’re gunna kill ya,” he said.

Walker escalated the threats by indicating he had a sharp weapon which he had fashioned from a broken aluminium can.

His lawyer argued the sentence should be more lenient because Walker didn’t use the weapon.

“He didn’t use the can. He threw it down,” he said.

“He admits he should have stayed away.”

Walker has been in police custody since he was arrested on November 27 for breaching a previous corrections order. He appeared in court via video link, where his de facto partner was there to support him.

Magistrate Mark Douglass took into consideration Walker’s disadvantaged upbringing when making his judgment.

“He’s not to be blamed for the way he was brought up but he must learn not to commit serious offences like this,” he said.

He determined that full-time imprisonment was the only appropriate sentence for such a “serious example of affray”. Walker was sentenced to 11 months in jail with a four-month non-parole period, so he will be eligible for parole on March 26,.

He has been ordered to abstain from drugs and alcohol and participate in anger management.

As for the co-accused, the charges for Mr Anthon and Mr McGuire have been withdrawn and Mr Roberts and Mr Roux have pleaded not guilty to affray .
