A truck driver will face court in June over a five-vehicle crash near the Southern Tablelands on Wednesday morning, involving six people.

The Victorian man, 59, was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive in a dangerous manner, and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

At about 10.20am on Wednesday, emergency services including a rescue helicopter were called to the Barton Highway, Wallaroo, around 40km south of Yass, after four cars and a truck collided.

Police were told the man was driving a B-double truck southeast on the Highway when he allegedly struck the rear of a stationary Toyota Kluger waiting at roadworks.

The impact slammed the vehicle into three more cars.

A 33 year-old woman – the driver of the Toyota Kluger – was trapped for some time in the car before being freed by Fire and Rescue NSW.

She was treated by NSW paramedics for spinal and leg injuries before being taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The three other drivers and a passenger involved were all taken to Cavalry Hospital in stable conditions for further treatment.

The truck driver was left uninjured and was arrested and transported to hospital for mandatory testing, then taken to Yass Police Station.

Officers attached to The Hume Police District established a crime scene and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with the help of specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following inquiries the man was charged and granted conditional bail to appear at Yass Local Court on June 17.
