A multimillion-dollar medical hub to feature a gym and medical centre has been approved in a bid to transform the area into a lifestyle and health precinct.

Canterbury-Bankstown council have green-lit plans for a $13m three-storey medical and business centre on 437-433 Canterbury Rd, Campsie – only 800m from Canterbury Hospital.

The plans will include a gym on the lower ground floor alongside a cafe, a 565sq m medical centre, 166sq m for two businesses and a separate entry and exit crossover to Canterbury Rd on the ground floor.

The first level will be dedicated to medical use, including a pharmacy, imaging and radiology, dental surgery, pathology and other allied healthcare specialists suites from 50sq m to 500sq m.

The project, named The Hub will have a second floor with more than 500sq m for businesses.

Planners for the development state the centre would create a “dynamic lifestyle and health hub” and provide “flexible workspaces and a diverse range of amenities” less than 15km from the Sydney CBD.

The proposed operating hours for the medical centre are seven days a week from 8am to 10pm, 24 hours for the gym, 7am to 7pm seven days a week for the cafe and 8am to 8pm for all medical suites on level one.

The businesses on the ground floor would be open from 8am to 10pm daily while level two would be open from 8am to 6pm.

The plan comes after a vision to transform an industrial site less than 900m away into a “one-stop shop” medical precinct including a $450m private hospital and 100-room medi-hotel received gateway support by Canterbury-Bankstown Council.

Neetan Investments’ plans for the Campsie Private Hospital on 11 Harp St, Campsie have proceeded to gateway determination after Canterbury-Bankstown’s local planning panel voted unanimously in support of the 69,007sq m health hub.

The hospital – to be built opposite Canterbury Hospital – would have 200 beds, a 150-place hospital-related childcare centre for hospital staff and patients.

The health hub would also comprise a 100-bed medi-hotel, rehabilitation and respite facility, medical research and innovation centre and a clinical teaching space.

Planners state the project would support nearby Canterbury Hospital because there is a “strong demand” for a private hospital in the fast-growing area.

“The planning proposal … will make an important contribution towards realising the vision for the corridor between Campsie and Kingsgrove as an ‘eastern lifestyle and medical precinct’,” planners state.

The developments come after Health Minister Ryan Park revealed in March a masterplan of the new $1.3bn Bankstown Hospital was under way, while major expansions to Canterbury Hospital were also in the works.

Mr Park said funding to build a new hospital in the Bankstown CBD had been approved, with a new specialist emergency ward, intensive care unit, a mental health unit and ambulatory care services.

In December, NSW Health confirmed the hospital would be built at the Bankstown TAFE campus site – just metres from the Bankstown city centre and future Metro station site.
