A $1.7 billion plan to dramatically expand four western Sydney hospitals has been confirmed, as the NSW Government green-lights masterplanned expansions to boost bed numbers and specialist services.

Health Minister Ryan Park revealed to The Daily Telegraph masterplanning of the new $1.3 billion Bankstown Hospital is now underway, while major expansions to Canterbury, Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals were also in the works.

Mr Park said funding to build a new hospital in the Bankstown CBD had been approved, with a new specialist emergency ward, intensive care unit, surgery and interventional procedures, women’s and children’s health services, aged health, a mental health unit and ambulatory care services.

In December, NSW Health confirmed the hospital would be built at the current Bankstown TAFE campus site – just metres from the Bankstown city centre and future metro station site.

“The site of the new Bankstown Hospital offers precinct opportunities for health, education, research partners, including TAFE NSW and universities, to meet the learning needs of the local community, improve educational outcomes, and support the state’s priority skills need,” a NSW Health spokeswoman said.

“Services will continue to be delivered at the existing hospital while construction on the new hospital is underway.

“When the new facility is completed and services have transferred, the existing site will be

considered for repurposing for health uses.”

Mr Park said the new hospital would be designed as a “world class health care facility, which makes the most of its location”.

While Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital ED director Dr Matt Smith said it would offer “state-of-the-art facilities” in Sydney’s southwest.

The Bankstown Hospital plans come as the NSW Government also ticked off on the start of planning for a $350 million expansion of Canterbury Hospital – the first major upgrade in 26 years.

“In the coming months, the lead design team will work with Health Infrastructure and Sydney Local Health District to determine the key clinical service priorities and progress the planning for the redevelopment,” Mr Park said.

Meanwhile, in Sydney’s west, a $120 million plan to expand Blacktown and Mt Druitt hospitals – to feature an additional 60 beds – is also underway.

“From Blacktown to Mount Druitt and Riverstone, this investment will deliver modern health care facilities to serve one of the country’s fastest-growing communities and provide the best possible workplace for our dedicated health staff,” Mr Park said.

The two sites operate as a single hospital, servicing 90,000 patients in both emergency departments each year.
