A teen woman sobbed, panicked about her safety and asked for a kebab in footage captured on a police bug minutes before she was charged over her alleged involvement in a 16-year-old boy’s murder.

Jason Galleghan was bashed to death at a Doonside home on August 6, 2021 by alleged associates of a postcode gang over accusations he had stolen a pair of AirPods from Kayla Dawson.

Dawson, then 19, and Richard Sione, then 31, have been charged with murder over their alleged involvement in his death.

The Crown alleges Dawson lured Jason to her home where he was bashed, and that Sione was significantly involved in the assault which left he teen with unsurvivable injuries.

Dawson is defending the charge on the basis she is intellectually impaired and acted under duress, while Sione says he was not responsible for the fatal blows as the assault continued after he left the scene.

In the trial at the NSW Supreme Court on Wednesday, the Crown played footage captured on a secret police surveillance device inside Dawson’s home two days after Jason’s death.

In the footage, Dawson sobs to her then-boyfriend Harley Bartolo while lying on her couch and smoking.

Bartolo previously pleaded to being an accessory after the fact in an assault in respect of the incident but it has never been alleged Bartolo was physically involved in the fatal attack.

“I can’t leave my house, I need to get out of here, babe, I need to get out of here now,” Dawson sobbed to Bartolo.

“Put water on your face and talk to me,” Bartolo urged.

“Nothing happened to me, I just can’t leave.”

Bartolo then referred to needing to return to Blacktown police station to update his statement about what happened on August 6.

“I’ve gotta go in and see them … now was Ritchie here … was Ritchie here when it started?” Bartolo asked.

“Yeah,” Dawson responded.

“F—k, I don’t know what to do babe, I’m scared to leave.”

Dawson then asked Bartolo to bring her hot chips and a kebab on his way back from the police station before an irate woman is heard over speaker phone.

“Put your f—ked up girlfriend on the phone, I’m telling you, tell her I’m gonna f—king jump all over her f–king face,” the woman said angrily.

“Who the f—k is she to go and take another life? Yeah you f—king did, you set it up, therefore if you didn’t f—king set it up it wouldn’t have f—king happened.”

Bartolo then suggested Dawson should “go into protected custody” as the woman on the phone continued her tirade.

“Do you feel good that you set it up?” the woman demanded.

“I didn’t set it up for him to get killed,” Dawson responded, before Bartolo bemoaned how he had told those involved to let the stolen headphones go instead of retaliating against Jason.

“This is because of you opening your mouth and setting it up letting it happen inside your home, over a f—king postcode, over four numbers,” the woman continues.

“Remember this is your fault Kayla, your fault, if you didn’t open your mouth and say anything, this little boy’s life wouldn’t have got taken … do you realise he is now laying in a morgue? His body is cold.”

The court has previously heard evidence those involved in Jason’s death were associated with a Doonside postcode gang, and that during the assault Jason was ordered to renounce other youth street gangs on camera.

The woman then told Dawson to tell police she had “set it up” and footage caught on police bodyworn camera only minutes later shows Dawson telling police “I set the murder up” over the alleged theft.

The trial continues.
