Horrific footage of a teenager’s tragic final moments as he is savagely assaulted by individuals believed to be members of a western Sydney postcode gang has been played in court as two adults face trial over his alleged murder.
Jason Galleghan lost his life after a horrendous bashing – said to have been provoked by an allegedly stolen set of AirPods – at a Doonside property on August 4, 2021.
The home’s primary resident Kayla Dawson, 20, and her associate Richard Sione, 32, have both pleaded not guilty to his murder and are now facing trial at the NSW Supreme Court.
The court has previously heard the Crown will allege Sione bashed Jason for several minutes at Dawson’s property in retribution for the teen allegedly stealing Dawson’s AirPods.
Several children who were allegedly members of a Mt Druitt-based postcode gang are then shown to continue the brutal assault in a series of gut-wrenching videos played in court.
On Wednesday, one of the children present during the assault was examined by Sione’s counsel Taran Ramrakha.
“(The man) said ‘that’s enough, that’s enough, it’s finished, he’s learned his lesson’,” Mr Ramrakha asked.
“Yes,” the child responded.
“You tried to stomp on his head,” Mr Ramrakha suggested.
“Yes,” the child responded.
The court was then closed to the general public as two videos captured at the start and end of the nightmarish attack on Jason were played.
In the first video, a girl present during the attack screams “go hard, stomp on his f--king head” and “finish him off, go go go”.
In the second video, Jason is ordered on camera to disavow other youth gangs – clarified by the child giving evidence to mean an inner west youth gang called 21, an “Islander” gang called KVT, and a “Sudanese, African” gang called MOB.
A male voice is heard to say “break every bone in his f--king body, c--t”.
The specific violence depicted in the videos is too graphic and distressing to repeat.
Mr Ramrakha asked the child why various other children present during the assault would have asked Jason to say those words on camera and then publish the videos online.
“You were trying to big-note yourself, you wanted to elevate your standing in this community you were part of, this street gang culture,” Mr Ramrakha suggested.
“Yes,” the child responded.
The child conceded that upon his arrest following Jason’s death, he told police “the c--t deserved it”.
He also acknowledged receiving a message, allegedly from Dawson, saying Jason was not breathing.
The trial continues.
