Troy Gurney: Blacktown man jailed over child sex act

A child sex offender kissed his mother’s head before being led to the cells after a court heard of his sickening crimes.

A western Sydney man will spend more than a year behind bars after being convicted of child sex offences.

Troy Stanley Gurney, 34, was charged in October last year over inciting a young girl known to him to sexually touch him several times.

The Blacktown man pleaded guilty to one count of carrying out a sexual act on the girl, who is aged under 10, and five counts of inciting the girl to sexually touch him.

Gurney was initially refused bail, but was later released on strict conditions after forfeiting $50,000.

Facing Blacktown Local Court on Wednesday to learn his fate, an emotional Gurney kissed his mother’s head as he was jailed for a minimum of 13 months.

The court heard Gurney had a clean criminal record and his offending had “surprised” his family.

Medical reports tendered to the court described Gurney as having a “quirky” personality, but he was not diagnosed with a mental condition or autism.

A psychiatrist described Gurney as being at low risk of committing similar crimes in the future. His offences were further deemed to be “situational”, the court heard.

Magistrate Karen Robinson found special circumstances in the case, citing Gurney’s need for access to ongoing rehabilitation and treatment.

Magistrate Robinson said there was “no alternative” to full-time custody.

Gurney will be eligible for release in May 2022 and will serve a further seven months on parole.

He is banned from contacting the girl for seven years.
