An aspiring model and dancer known for her distinctive red hair has been released from police custody after allegedly assaulting two officers at Sydney’s busy King Street Wharf.

Talaya Newton, 25, of Kinsgrove, was granted bail at Parramatta Local Court on Thursday as she faces two counts each of assaulting police officers and resisting arrest following an incident on January 24.

Newton is alleged to have assaulted two separate police officers - including a probationary constable - at the Darling Harbour Wharf, while also in possession of a knife, about 9.30pm.

The following day, Newton was slapped with a charge of drug possession after she was allegedly discovered with 0.36g of crystal meth.

Documents tendered to the court reveal Newton has previously faced knife-related charges.

A representative of the police prosecution warned in court that Newton’s alleged actions were “concerning”, in particular an unspecified incident allegedly involving a police firearm.

“There is concern that if Newton was released, she would endanger not just police but the public,” he said.

Newton’s lawyer said the amateur model suffered from anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

He said Newton was undergoing treatment with mental health services.

Magistrate Rob Rabbidge granted Newton conditional bail, including a curfew between 8pm and 8am.

Newton is expected to reappear before Sydney Downing Centre Local Court on February 8.
