The best young softballers in the state descended on western Sydney over the weekend as Blacktown International Sportspark hosted the under-19 women’s state softball championships.
Ten teams braved the chilly conditions to battle it out for the Ruth Preddey trophy, with Hornsby District Softball Association ultimately crowned champions after beating Sutherland Shire in the final.
The clash saw the tournament’s two most consistent teams collide, with Hornsby only dropping one game while Sutherland entered the final undefeated.
However, Hornsby proved unstoppable with the bat, scoring at will to run away with the 7-1 victory and claim their second title in three years.
In what was her final under-19 state championships appearance, Hornsby star Jorja Barrett said it was good to “go out with a bang”.
“Every game was hard fought,” she said. “There were no easy games - every team was great.
“The level of softball played across the weekend was just amazing.”
The softball action continues over the long weekend with Blacktown playing host to the over-35s mens and women’s state championships.
