Budding BMX star Sophie Craig has a big goal ahead for 2018 — win a state title on her home track.
Sophie, 13, of Acacia Gardens, has been a member of the Castle Hill BMX Club for almost a decade, first joining the club when she was four.
She followed in her older brother’s footsteps by taking up the sport and has since gone on to compete at state, national and international level in her age group.
She recently finished sixth at nationals in Western Australia but hopes to bounce back with a strong showing in September at the state champs.
“We are very proud of her and her dedication,” her mum Belinda Craig said.
“Her goal now is the state champs on her home track.”
Ms Craig said Sophie would love to win a state title in Castle Hill in September: “She has been a state champion in the past and has been world No.3 for her age.”
Sophie is known for her hard work in training, juggling gym, sprint or track sessions most days of the week while also attending Norwest Christian College in Riverstone.
Sophie said she had learned a lot from riding.
“When you get knocked down, pick yourself up,” she said. “That’s what I have to do. Be determined.”
Sophie is the latest nominee for the Advocate’s Local Sports Stars awards, which runs until August 31. Prizes are awarded to athletes aged 18 and under over four categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individua; and Young Sporting Spirit Team. There is also a Service To Sport category.
