Doonside now has its first ever gym with a Snap Fitness franchise recently opened by four Doonside locals in recent weeks.
Michael Georgy, his wife Tamara Georgy, and husband and wife duo Shirein and Jay Hickman, had a vision for more than 10 years to open a gym in the area they love and were raised in. For the dynamic quartet, opening the gym was much more than just providing a place to exercise, it was a chance to give the community a place to feel at home.
“Growing up in Doonside, we understand the area and identified a gap in the market and a need for a community location where people could gather together to socialise, exercise, and be a place for the youth in the region to come and spend their time,” said Michael Georgy.
“Our facility isn’t just a gym for our members. When they enter Snap Fitness Doonside, they’re walking into a community. It is a place where you can work out at your own pace and socialise with the local Doonside community and people from surrounding areas,” he said.
Snap Fitness Doonside has state of the art facilities including; classes, Olympic-standard equipment, beauty bars in the female bathrooms and Netflix on some exercise equipment.
The business has had its fair share of hurdles to overcome in its early stages, with their October grand opening third time lucky following earlier attempts being impacted by Covid in April and June.
“We waited 110 days to open the gym, but since opening our doors almost one month ago, our members have been excellent at supporting our requirements to continue operations under the current Covid restrictions, from cleanliness to top-notch safety,” Mr Georgy said.
Michael Georgy is excited about what the future holds for his gym and the wider community.
“I want to create something that feels more than just a gym,” he said. “When you join us, you join the local subway group and the wider Doonside community. It is a community hub that is larger than just a gym, it is larger than a gym, it is a family and that is reflected by our members telling us they feel like they are part of something.
“As we continue to grow, our aim is to expand our partnerships. We have a vision of local businesses supporting other local business with Snap Fitness Doonside leading the way … One day we hope to see Snap Fitness posters in every business around Doonside.”
