Semih Parlak: Wilson security guard stole goods from Fox Sports

It has been revealed how a security guard managed to steal $28,000 of electronics while on the job – before eventually being caught in the act.

A security guard stole more than $28,000 worth of smartphones, laptops, and even a television while on the job.

Semih Parlak, 21, from Woodcroft, was a Wilson security guard when he breached his position of trust and stole several expensive electronic items at his workplace, Fox Sports Australia, from last August to September, a court has heard.

He had only been on the job for three months when he first decided to sneak into the electronics storeroom and brazenly steal a MacBook Pro laptop valued at $5236.

Just minutes later he returned and took another three laptops and dropped them off in his car.

Over the course of a month, he stole three iPhone 11s, a Samsung Galaxy S10, five MacBook Pros, an iPad and even a Samsung 24 inch television worth a total of $28,677.

On some occasions, he took the still packaged items and put them in his backpack before dropping them off in his car midway through his shift while other times he took whole boxes directly to his car, according to agreed facts.

One time he even took a new packaged Macbook Pro laptop to his car before returning to the security desk with the unpackaged item.

He then logged into the company Wi-Fi as ‘John Smith’ and used the laptop before putting it in his backpack and leaving at the end of his shift.

Last September, Parlak went to CeX pawnbroker store in Blacktown’s Westpoint Shopping Centre and sold the stolen Samsung mobile for cash.

Parlak fronted Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday for his sentence on eight charges relating to larceny, making a false statement to a pawnbroker, and disposing of stolen property.

In court, his lawyer Jeremy Wood argued that a jail sentence was not necessary and asked the magistrate to take into account Parlak’s young age.

Yet magistrate Louise McManus said she believed the offences did warrant a jail term served in the community.

“They're large items...worth a lot of money,” she said.

“The amount of money adds up to a significant amount. The breach of trust as well makes it a serious larceny.”

She also noted he had repeated the offences over a period of time.

As she handed down her sentence, the magistrate told Parlak the stealing was “deliberate.”

“You were in a position of trust. Your job was to make sure this didn't happen,” she told the court.

“If you weren't so young I would send you to full-time custody for an offence like this.”

Parlak was sentenced to a 12-month intensive corrections order.

He was also ordered to do 80 hours of community service and continue mental health counselling.
