Salahudeen Zakarya pleads guilty to aggravated break and enter

A western Sydney man staged a terrifying home invasion in which he yelled about Islamic demons during a drug induced psychotic episode which followed a three day cocaine binge, a court has heard.

A man who staged a terrifying home invasion while experiencing a drug induced psychotic episode following a three day cocaine binge has escaped a jail sentence.

Kellyville man Salahudeen Zakarya, 32, was sentenced in Parramatta District Court on December 8 after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated break and enter, assault and resisting arrest.

Agreed police facts tendered to the court state on the evening of December 18 2021, Zakarya broke into a Woodcroft residence occupied by where five strangers between the ages of 11 and 21.

Zakarya had parked a Porsche belonging to his mother on a nearby street before jumping over the garden fence while yelling “Allah we Akhbar”.

Upon seeing the intruder jump the fence, two 21-year-old women inside the residence called triple zero.

The facts state Zakarya ran at the front door, causing its window pane to smash, and then climbed through the broken glass into the house, wounding himself in the process.

When they heard Zakarya enter house one of the women fled into some bushes outside, while the other stayed inside and yelled at Zakarya “get out of my house”.

Zakarya responded “Allah we Akhbar” before beginning to wreak havoc by upturning a couch, turning over a coffee table and smashing multiple lamps in the room while bleeding from his wounds and yelling in Arabic

The children aged 11 and 13, who were previously asleep upstairs, woke upon hearing the glass smash and were instructed by their sister to stay in their rooms while Zakarya continued his rampage.

After smashing up the living room Zakarya momentarily ran out the front door, leaving his phone inside.

The 21-year-old woman who had remained inside locked the door before Zakarya smashed and then climbed into a different window.

A man living next door heard the screams and breaking glass and sprinted over to help before he found the distraught young woman standing outside who pleaded with him:

“There’s a robber in the house to get the kids.”

The man rushed inside where Zakarya was sitting down and chanting “Allah we Akbah”, before telling him “Come at me.”

“I’m not afraid to die.”

Zakarya proceeded to pick up a broken coffee table leg and advance towards the man who then kicked him in the chest causing him to topple backwards.

The two men continued to tussle, with the man later reporting Zakarya said “I am Shaitan”, which is an evil demonic entity in Islam.

The neighbour managed to push Zakarya out the front door and in doing so injured himself by falling off the front porch.

Zakarya then took off running down the street before an unknown man approached him with his hand outstretched saying “Stop please.”

In response Zakarya elbowed him in the face.

The neighbour‘s uncle then approached Zakarya addressing him in Arabic which caused him to momentarily calm down.

By this stage a crowd of neighbours had gathered who watched police arrive, wrestle and handcuff a profusely bleeding Zakarya to the ground.

He was then taken to hospital suffering multiple injuries, including two puncture wounds and a cut on his arm so deep it exposed bone.

While in hospital, Zakarya told staff he had been on a three-day bender during which he had “three bags” of cocaine and alcohol.

Court documents state he also told staff he “might be having a manic episode” and reported thinking people were shooting at him, hearing “Middle Eastern voices” screaming and seeing a “gangster’s face from the past.”

On December 21, police visited Zakarya in hospital and charged him, before he was taken into custody and denied bail.

Bail was later granted and on October 21 2022 Zakarya appeared in Penrith Local Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charges with a trial date then set for June 23 2023.

Two months later he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced in Parramatta District Court to a community correction order of two years and six months.
