A decommissioned 1940s fire station in Sydney’s west is set to undergo a major transformation.
The heritage listed Ropes Crossing Fire Station, at 304 Wianamatta Rd, hasn’t been used since 2008 but will soon become a community hub with a cafe or restaurant, indoor gym and other spaces after it was approved for redevelopment by Blacktown Council.
The Museum of Fire website states the former station opened in 1942 and was used up until 2008 when the brigade moved to a new station on Plasser Cres and then to its current location on Forrester Rd.
Developer York Developments bought the 4.2ha site for $4.17m in 2016 and the land was later subdivided into five lots.
The development application to renovate the fire station was lodged with Blacktown Council in December 2022.
Development plans state the back of the station will be extended to create a new indoor gym space and a separate shop space.
The rest of the inside will be altered to include a cafe or restaurant, and another two shop spaces.
The project is estimated to cost $2.7m.
York Developments director Gerry Burges said tenants for the new spaces were yet to be locked in.
He estimated the building would be complete within 18 months.
