A girl has told of how her family abandoned her in the wake of reporting her sexually abusive cop father to police.

The former senior Mt Druitt police officer, who can’t be named for legal reasons, was found guilty by a jury of numerous child sexual assault charges in November, including aggravated sexual intercourse with a child (10 or younger), as well as producing child abuse material.

The incidents are understood to have occurred over numerous years.

The Parramatta District court also heard the man, 45, had, in his possession more than 100 photos of naked children in different poses and videos of children performing sexual acts.

In what Judge Sophia Beckett called an “upsetting feature” of the case, the 17-year-old told the court after reporting her father to police, her family rejected her, friends found out, and she was forced to move out of home and support herself from 14-years-old.

“My whole family turned their backs on me. I had no one. I haven’t talked to my mother in almost three years. Sometimes when I’m upset I message her crying out for help but to no success,” she told the court, crying.

She said she went to visit her brother, who lives nearby, crying and telling him that she loves him and her mother, telling him he should have protected her – and “he told me to leave”.

The girl’s grandfather wrote public Facebook posts calling his granddaughter a liar, the court heard, and told her she had caused his lung cancer from stress.

Family from overseas messaged her out of the blue to say she was making it all up for attention and “if I said it all was a lie my family would come back to normal”, the court heard.

Her father has enjoyed weekly visits from his family in prison, the court heard.

She told the court of the fear she felt living in “that household … having the fear he would hurt me”, and the trauma it has caused her.

“When I’m in my room, I need to have windows covered and lights on because I’m always scared someone is looking at me,” she said.

“This has been the hardest thing to go through and no one understands,” she told the court.

The man’s barrister Ken Buckman told the court he would suffer hardships in prison.

“Because of his previous occupation, he’s going to be not only in protective custody but going to effectively be living in fear … probably more so than other people who have been convicted of this type of offence”.

“He will be looking over his shoulder while in custody, that’s for sure,” Mr Buckman told the court.

He was found guilty at trial of grooming a child under 14 for unlawful sexual activity, two counts of possessing child abuse material, three counts of indecently assaulting someone under 16, two counts of aggravated sexual assault against someone under 10 years and producing child abuse material.

He will be sentenced on these charges.

He was found not guilty at trial of one charge of attempting sexual intercourse with a person under 10 years old.

The man’s sentence was adjourned to next Friday.
