NSW Food Authority names and shames eateries busted for food safety breaches

Almost 20 eateries in the Blacktown area have been fined for food safety offences in the last 12 months, according to the NSW Food Authority.

Almost 20 eateries across the Blacktown area have been busted by the NSW Food Authority in the past 12 months for breaching food safety standards.

Almost $21,000 in fines have been handed out to 19 businesses in the Blacktown Local Government Area since July 2018 for breaches including unclean kitchens, failing to keep food at the required temperature and failing to seal walls to keep out dirt and pests.

The NSW Food Authority’s Name and Shame Register shows 32 penalty notices totalling $21,790 were issued by Blacktown City Council to eateries in Blacktown, Mt Druitt and surrounding suburbs.

Among the worst offenders were Rainbow Supa IGA and Cafe at Doonside and Maharaja’s Haveli at Quakers Hill, with both outlets receiving more than $2600 worth of fines for multiple breaches.

Rainbow Supa IGA & Cafe was fined for failing to maintain the premises and equipment after a prior warning; failing to maintain cleanliness after a prior warning; and, failing to ensure walls and ceilings were sealed from pests, dirt and dust, also after a previous warning.

Maharaja’s Haveli was penalised for failing to keep the premises clean, failing to protect food from contamination and failing to keep floors clean.

Popular takeaway franchises Subway and Nando’s were also hit with fines at their Arndell Park and Blacktown stores for a lack of handwashing facilities and for failing to protect food from contamination, respectively.

Tropical Foods and Takeaway in Blacktown was slapped with three penalty notices totalling $1650 for pests, failing to keep the premises clean and not complying with a prohibition order.

The NSW Food Authority publishes a list of breaches of food safety laws in its Name and Shame Register, with businesses issued with a penalty notice listed on the register for 12 months.

Statewide, there are currently 1478 penalties are listed on the register.
