The changing face of the Blacktown CBD is a step closer, with crews marking the end of the demolition of the old Blacktown Mall.
Stage one of works in Blacktown Council’s Warrick Ln redevelopment project reached another milestone this month after demolition work began at the site in April.
The first stage is now complete and involved the knocking down and levelling of the old Blacktown Mall and surrounding shops at the Main St site.
The next stage of the project will begin in mid July and involve the demolition of 81-83 Main St, including the Westpac and Connect Hearing buildings.
The demolition will make way for a 450-space underground carpark with buildings either side, a new town plaza and the Australia Catholic University’s future Blacktown campus.
The $76.5 million project aims to transform the Blacktown CBD and develop a new education, retail and dining precinct.
Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali said safety was key as works continued at the site.
“Throughout the demolition process, the council has insisted that contractors put in place strict dust, noise and vibration minimisation measures,” Cr Bali said.
“The site is sealed off from the surrounding area and specialist hazardous materials disposal measures are in place and rigorously enforced to ensure complete public safety.”
Demolition is expected to continue until August, with main works starting in September and continuing until late 2020.
The carpark is expected to be open by 2021.
The existing Warrick Ln carpark will remain open during the work, but will lose 50 spaces when construction begins at the site in September.
Pedestrians are advised to watch for trucks entering and leaving the site.
