The redevelopment of the Blacktown CBD is one step closer with demolition crews moving into the Blacktown Mall site at Warrick Ln this month.
Hoardings and scaffolding have been put up around the buildings at the corner of Main St and Warrick Ln as crews prepare the site for demolition of the old buildings.
A 450-space underground car park, new town plaza and flanking retail spaces on the ground floor will be constructed in its place as part of stage one of the Warrick Ln redevelopment project.
A Blacktown Council spokesperson said demolition contractor Mercon took possession of the site earlier this month, with the latest work involving the removal of non-structural materials from inside the buildings.
Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali public safety was a priority during the work.
“Your Council has insisted that the demolition contractors put in place strict dust, noise and vibration minimisation measures,” Mr Bali said.
“These measures include wetting down areas, regular sweeping of paved roads, strict controls on the loading of trucks, truck speed limits and truck loads being covered at all times.
“The site will be sealed off from the surrounding area and specialist asbestos disposal measures are being put in place and will be rigorously enforced to ensure complete public safety.”
Demolition is scheduled to take place over three months ahead of the excavation and construction of the car park.
Pedestrians are advised to be aware of trucks entering and exiting Warrick Ln via Sunnyholt Rd.
Further stages of the Warrick Ln redevelopment will see four high-rise buildings constructed in the old carpark, which will house a commercial precinct and Blacktown’s future university campus.
Stage one is set to be completed in 2020.
