Primary schools in the Blacktown Local Government Area are outperforming students at similar schools across the country in key NAPLAN subjects, new data shows.
The 2018 NAPLAN results, uploaded to the Australia Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority’s My School website this week, showed which primary schools across the Blacktown area achieved results “above” or “substantially above” other schools with similar students.
NAPLAN tests assess primary students in years 3 and 5 and high school students in years 7 and 9 in literacy and numeracy.
The results of students with a similar Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA), were compared by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority to determine how schools fared against others with similar challenges and opportunities.
Year 3 students at Quakers Hill Public School, Caddies Creek Public School, The Australian Islamic College of Sydney, St John Vianney’s Primary School and Kings Langley Public School achieved results “significantly above” similar schools in at least one subject.
Students in year 5 at Quakers Hill Public School, The Australian Islamic College of Sydney and Blacktown North Public School scored “significantly above” in at least one subject.
In the Blacktown area, government schools were strong performers, with four public schools making up the top 10 schools in the region. These included Quakers Hill Public School, Caddie Creek Public School, John Palmer Public School and Kings Langley Public School.
Catholic and independent schools each scored three places in the top 10 ranking for the Blacktown area. Making the list was Rouse Hill Anglican College, The Australian Islamic College of Sydney, St John Vianney’s Primary School, Norwest Christian College, Holy Cross Primary School and Mary Immaculate Primary School.
Mountain View Adventist College in Doonside celebrated above average results across three subjects, when compared to similar schools.
Principal Julia Heise credited the results to the college’s dedicated teachers and a focus on literacy and numeracy.
“As educators, our role is to prepare students for the 21st century. That requires a
commitment to both the basics — reading, writing and mathematics as well as the four c’s
— collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking,” Ms Heise said.
“Above average growth for our students requires the children to believe in themselves.
We instil a ‘growth mindset culture,’ where students believe they can learn when they
focus on one step at a time and work hard to reach their learning goals.”
